DRAM refers to the central ‘’splitting’’ of the longitudinal abdominal muscles (your ‘’six pack’’) that can occur during pregnancy. It often contributes to the ‘’jelly belly’’ syndrome. A very specific program of abdominal muscle rehabilitation is required if you experience this. It is important not to rush into conventional ‘’ab exercises’’ such as sit-ups or Pilates too early, or you could make the problem worse. DRAM needs to be assessed by a physiotherapist, and it needs to be assessed in the weeks after childbirth, as it is not reliably assessed in the first 24-48 hours after childbirth.
